“I Can’t Do It!” - Facing Fear and Self-Doubt
The company needs a speaker for an upcoming meeting, and your boss has asked you to do it. "I can't talk in front of all of those people!" your inner voice screams.
So, what do you do to overcome your feelings of fear and self-doubt? The reality is that you are the one who has to overcome them. No one can do it for you. So what steps will you take?
Everyone experiences self-doubt and fear
Remind yourself that everyone experiences these feelings at one time or another. The only difference between them and you is that they don't let their fear and self-doubt stop them from trying.
Stay busy
You've made the decision that you are going to proceed, so just do it. Unlike the Staples' commercial, you will not find an "Easy" button. Our fears can actually help alert us to dangers we should be wary of, but it doesn’t mean "don't do it." An idle mind is an easy target for thoughts of fear and self-doubt to step in.
Step out of your comfort zone
The world today is looking for comfort, but if you seek comfort alone, you will never advance. Unless you are the boss's child, you will never know what is on the other side until you step out of your comfort zone and climb to the top.
Imagine a Reward
If there is no personal reward for doing something, many people run away. Would you run if a reward of $100,000 was offered to do it? Hmmm. Would that make things a little different? Would you still fear? Yes. But would you do it? Probably.
Work Hard
Success does not require the smartest or the one with the greatest knowledge. It just demands you work harder than the competition.
Avoid "negative imprints"
When you start remembering that someone you respected (a parent, teacher, etc.) told you that you couldn't do something or that it was impossible, push that "negative imprint" away. There were many people in my life who had opinions of what I could and couldn’t do. Once I stopped focusing on what they thought, I began to focus on who I was creating myself to be. An inspiration for business owners to put power into their lives and businesses, while making more money while working less.
Seek Wise Counsel
Finally, be careful who you take advice from and what you accept as your system of beliefs. Do you take advice from successful seasoned professionals, or do you take advice from negative, stagnate friends who have never experienced consistent success in their own lives? Get wise counsel from successful business owners; then make your decision and act on it.
