When I was in elementary school, my teachers would send home a newsletter that was usually a one page document (if they were really savvy, it would be a 11X17 page folded into a four page, front and back manifesto with clip art and calendars) that highlighted the Spaghetti dinner, upcoming school play, and student of the month.
Honestly, I believe they hated creating them. We hated taking them home, and lost them often.
Unfortunately, when I started creating newsletters, I always thought about those school newsletters, that were either two short with bad pictures and incorrect dates, or way too long and wasteful. Now – erase that image from your mind.
Now is a great time to make newsletters a part of your marketing plan. Here's why:
#1 – They are simple, efficient way to reach out.
Today's newsletters are created in simple to use software, like Constant Contact, iContact, and MailChimp. This software is web-based, and is mostly plug and play, in that you don't need to know how to code to put together a quality publication. These newsletters can be completely branded to your business: down to colors, logos, and text. Even better, the newsletters don't have to be five pages long. No paper is wasted – your customer's can print them if they want, but most choose not to. When the newsletter opens, it looks very much like an email, and functions the same way.
#2 – Newsletters keep your clients in the loop.
Remember that there's a reason that your customers choose to work with you or buy your product. They like you! More often than not, you have competition out there, but they choose to work with you. Honor their choice and keep them in the loop! Let them know about you: the services you provide, how you can help them, and even some things that are going on with your business. You can even include a coupon in the newsletter to thank them for their loyalty.
#3 – Newsletters create a sense of community around your brand.
A quality newsletter creates a community around your brand. Why? Precisely because of the second point above. Clients are in the know, they know how to contact you if they need to, and they know they're getting a good deal. In addition, you're sharing a part of yourself, not just your company, with them. A quick newsletter shows you care and that you value their time.
A well designed newsletter can engage your customers and create loyalty. Unlike the newsletters of the past, they can be tailored to your brand and your customers. They don't have to be long, and they are easy to implement. Spring is a great time to do it – so get started today!
